What is Yeosu Expo all about?

An International Exposition recognized by the International Exhibitions Bureau(BIE) which opened May 12, 2012 and will run until August 12, 2012. The theme of the Expo is The Living Ocean and Coast” with subthemes of “Preservation and Sustainable Development of the Ocean and Coast,” “New Resources Technology,” and “Creative Marine Activities.”

There are  105 countries participated in the Expo. Like most world's fairs, the international participants occupy the largest area: a large International Participants Pavilion that also includes a huge overhead video screen over its central axis. Other notable buildings on site are the Korean Pavilion, the Theme Pavilion, and the Aquarium. Off-site an Expo Town was built to house the workers during the exposition. These buildings will become housing after the exposition.

                                                     Yeony and Suny Expo Mascot

Yeony and Suny is  the official mascots of Expo 2012. The mascot duo are anthropomorphic plankton, who serve as both nutrients for marine life but also absorb carbon dioxide. It’s no coincidence that the beginning of their names, put together, creates the name of the host city: Yeosu, which means “beautiful water.”

The Samul Nori (사물놀이): Soul of Korean Music

The Samul Nori (사물놀이):  The Soul of Korean Music

The Samul Nori (사물놀이) always attracts me because it is Soul of Korea traditional music. Samul nori sound brings the real energy of Korea. When i listen the Samul nori its make me feel the soul and soil of Korea. The Samul nori has a special place in the Asia musical tradition. The word samul means "four objects" and nori means "play". Samul nori is performed with four traditional Korean musical instruments namely; Kkwenggari( a small gong), Jing (a larher gong) Janggu (an hourglass shaped drum) and Buk (a barrel drum similar to the bass drum and these  traditional Korean instruments are called pungmul.

The Picture of participant with the Samul nori musical instruments namely Kkwenggari, Jing  Janggu and Buk .

The instructor of Samul nori explains about four different kinds of musical instruments.

I had very good opportunity to play the beautiful Korean traditional music called “Samul Nori”. The member of Brand Korea Communicator participated in the Pusan Fame Tour. It was 2 nights and 3 days. We participated in the various activities but the Samul Nori was most fascinating activity for me. I always appreciate and love the traditional cultural of Korea. Samul nori has special place in my heart.  I chose to play the buk which represents clouds The janggu represents rain, the  kkwaenggwari thunder, the Jing represents the sound of wind and  and the Buk represents the Clouds.

The idea of Yin and Yang is also reflected in these instruments: the buk and janggu (leather) represent the sounds of the earth, while the jing and kkwaenggwari (metal) represent sounds of the heavens. Although generally performed indoors, as a staged genre, samul nori depicts the traditional Korean culture; an agricultural society rooted in the natural environment Samul nori is characterized by strong, accented rhythms, vibrant body movements, and an energetic spirit.

All participants enjoy the wonderful Samul Nori. The best part of Samul nori is the sound is very energetic and refreshing.

Samul nori is soul of traditional Korean music. I enjoy a lot during playing the “ Buk” next time I want to try the other samul nori musical instruments like jing, Janggu or Kkwaenggwari. J

                                 Thank You very much..
