The Samul Nori (사물놀이): The Soul of Korean Music
The Samul Nori (사물놀이) always attracts me because it is Soul of Korea traditional music. Samul nori sound brings the real energy of Korea. When i listen the Samul nori its make me feel the soul and soil of Korea. The Samul nori has a special place in
the Asia musical tradition. The
word samul means "four objects" and nori means
"play". Samul nori is performed with four traditional Korean musical
instruments namely; Kkwenggari( a small gong), Jing (a
larher gong) Janggu (an hourglass shaped drum) and Buk (a barrel drum similar
to the bass drum and these traditional
Korean instruments are called pungmul.

The instructor of Samul nori explains about four different
kinds of musical instruments.
I had very
good opportunity to play the beautiful Korean traditional music called “Samul
Nori”. The member of Brand Korea Communicator participated in the Pusan Fame
Tour. It was 2 nights and 3 days. We participated in the various activities but
the Samul Nori was most fascinating activity for me. I always appreciate and
love the traditional cultural of Korea. Samul nori has special place in my
heart. I chose to play the buk which represents clouds. The janggu
represents rain, the kkwaenggwari
thunder, the Jing represents the sound of wind and and the Buk represents the Clouds.
The idea of Yin and Yang is
also reflected in these instruments: the buk and janggu (leather)
represent the sounds of the earth, while the jing and kkwaenggwari
(metal) represent sounds of the heavens. Although generally performed indoors,
as a staged genre, samul nori depicts the traditional Korean culture; an
agricultural society rooted in the natural environment Samul
nori is characterized by strong, accented rhythms, vibrant body
movements, and an energetic spirit.
